Samobor Carnival

The most well known event in the town of Samobor – the Carnival takes place every year end of month of February. It is one of the oldest and biggest carnival celebrations in the continental part of Croatia. Shrovetide are the custom of the transition period between winter and spring, and last day of Carnival is Shrove Tuesday, also known as Mardi Gras. It represents the last day of unlimited food and drink before the 40 days of Lent period. Carnival has become the trademark of Samobor, and during those days the town square becomes the main place of Carnival events.

Carnival itself begins with traditional proclamation of the Free Carnival Republic by traditional Carnival masks Prince, Magpie, Judge and Lawyer, who „govern“ the town during those days. In addition to the events held at the main square, programs take place at the square of Matica Hrvatska, in Livadićeva street, the main carnival tent, and in the theme park behind the movie theatre. During Carnival the town streets are filled with laughter and fun.
